How To Get Your Canine Used To A Backpack?

    SamanthaBy SamanthaApril 23, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

It is observed that puppies on an exercise regime are often mentally and physically strong. They are more cheerful and open to socialization than canine fur babies who lead a boring and inactive lifestyle.

A thirty-minute walk with sufficient breaks in between, a brief jog, run, or hike can keep a furry pet’s mind stimulated, bones, joints, and muscles healthy and help burn those extra calories. Even while you give your pet optimum exercise and engage it in play, many a time, sickness, allergies, and accidental injuries are inevitable.

This is precisely why you should consider being prepared with pet health insurance. Contemplate purchasing a cheap dog insurance policy at least so that your furry precious has a medical financial backup to lean on during testing times of health and emergencies.

In the meantime, read this article to learn how to get your pup used to a backpack before heading out for a hike.

Readying your pup for a hike

Preparing for a hike involves making a checklist of things needed for the hiking trip and packing them in an appropriate bag you can conveniently carry while hiking. If your furry precious is coming along, there is additional luggage to carry.

This is where the dog backpack comes in. Your furry little one needs basic things just like you need during the hike. For instance, collapsible food and water bowls, poop bags, and freshwater bottles are a few things your pet will need for a hiking episode with few hitches.

Buy a comfortable doggy backpack, stuff it with your poochie’s bare essentials, and allow it to carry the pack on its back during the hike. However, this is not as easy as it might seem for first-timers. Allow your four-legged companion to explore the pack and get used to wearing it much ahead of time.

This way, your puppy doesn’t get overwhelmed with the extra weight on its back and walks conveniently. Note that some dog breeds are more suited to carrying a backpack than others. Puppies can gradually pick up the skill provided their owners show much faith and confidence in them.

Step1: Allow your fur baby to investigate the pack; this includes a lot of sniffing, checking it out from various angles, licking, and touching the pack.

Step 2: Praise your pup when it shows interest in the backpack, keep your tone positive, show a well-done gesture, and give it a few pats on the back or head rubs so it associates the pack with a positive experience.

Step 3: After that, let your pet walk around a little without the pack, then with an empty pack on the back, and gradually move on to a pack filled with a few items on its back.

Ensure that the straps are correctly fixed, and reward your puppy with tasty treats whenever it walks around the place. Check if the backpack restricts movement or if straps get in the way of walking, and adjust them correctly.

This way, your pet can be prepared to handle its pack during a hike. It is common for puppies to slow down after a hike, but prolonged exhaustion should not be ignored. If your furry pet seems tired more than usual for days after a hike, take it to the vet asap for medical assistance.

Pet health insurance covers a little pupper’s unplanned vet visits, so consider being prepared with a policy. There are many cheap dog insurance policies available in the market; carefully weigh them up, then request and compare quotes before contemplating signing up for the best-fit plan for your pooch.
