When I first got the opportunity to work as a Mobile Editor at Techcrunch, I was very excited. It seemed like an ideal opportunity to get back into the mobile space and learn some new programming languages. I quickly became part of the team that helped launch tARdis, a mobile application that connects people and organizations. After a few months of working at the firm, I had my first article published on the website. The project has been a big success and I’m looking forward to helping it continue.
tARdis project
The tARdis project is an augmented reality app that renders a three-dimensional interior of the TARDIS in real time. It is made by former Techcrunch mobile editor Greg Kumparak. His app uses the Vuforia SDK and the Unity 3D engine. He describes it as “a miniature version of the TARDIS ship from Doctor Who.”
Kumparak, who has broken hundreds of technology news stories for TechCrunch, created the app while he was away from the site. He has been featured on TechCrunch’s video series and podcast, and appeared on stage at the Disrupt conference. As a result, the tARdis project received international and national coverage. IO9 and Wired also ran articles about the project.
During his development of the tARdis, Kumparak learned how to use the Vuforia SDK. In addition to creating a realistic model of the TARDIS, he also created an “augmented reality experience” in which the TARDIS’s interior is bigger on the inside.
